Symptoms of Vitamin D Deficiency
Vitamin D has been long forgotten as an essential vitamin, thanks to the popularity of vitamins like C, B6, and B12. However, this does not mean that you can’t suffer from Vitamin D deficiency; in fact it makes it even more difficult to spot because most people are not aware of the symptoms. Vitamin D is made by the human body, but when someone can’t get enough sunlight exposure, it becomes very easy to become deficient. Sure, there are some foods that contain Vitamin D, but most of them contain only trace amounts and cannot fulfill the daily requirement unless you are willing to drink gallons of fluids on a daily basis. Some commons signs for Vitamin D deficiency are muscle pains that don’t heal, fatigue, easily broken bones/weak bones and skeletal system, severe depression and/or mood swings, low immune response, difficulty sleeping, and even irritable bowel syndrome and Chron’s Disease.
If you have a hard time staying energetic or feel like you never are able to get into a rhythm, either physically or mentally, then you might have a Vitamin D deficiency. The signs are often masked by other causes, such as lack of sleep or a busy week that wears you down and most people think that a weekend can bring them back. However, when you go back to work on Monday feeling just as bad, if not worse, then you did on Friday, then there might be a problem.
Vitamin D is also shown to reduce your risk of certain cancers, such as breast, colon, ovarian, and prostate. It is also essential for improving and maintaining bone strength, which means you can use Vitamin D to help prevent Osteoporosis.
If you think you are suffering from a Vitamin D deficiency, then you can try getting a bit more sun; 15 minutes per day might be enough. You can also look for a tanning bed that uses UVB lamps. Food sources might help, but you are better off buying a Vitamin D pill or supplement if there is little to no sun in your area or you just don’t have the time to spend outdoors. The bottom line is that regardless of where you get your Vitamin D, you need to make sure that you get your daily recommend dose no matter what. Mixing Vitamin D sources is fine too, just make sure that you get it.
Lack of Vitamin D can change your life for the worse in more ways than one, so there is no reason not to add this to your list of priorities. If you’ve got a multivitamin, check to make sure that it contains Vitamin D too. If it doesn’t, add Vitamin D supplementation to your diet or find another multivitamin that contains it. There is no reason not to be safe instead of sorry.
